Catching Up With Brave Baby

Late last summer I stumbled across Brave Baby's 'Electric Friends' album. Barely knowing three songs on the album I instinctively bought it. The artwork alone is something to own proudly.

The album is just over six months old and already its one of my all time favourites. It presents you with a summer-like-daze of a world which is alive in the bands music. With tracks like Plastic Skateboard, you become immersed, almost lost, in the indie-soft-rock sound.

Keon Masters and Christian Chidester take care of the bands vocals and guitar pieces, along with Wolfgang Zimmerman on drums, vocals and production, with Jordan Hicks on bass and Steven Walker, Jr. on keys and piano.

The band formed when Keon, Christ and Wolf started playing together after high school and caught up with Jordan and Steve in Charleston, which eventually turned into Brave Baby after a few different sagas had passed.

Lead vocalist and guitarist, Keon Masters took me through the world of Brave Baby, whilst I was still feeling as if I had emerged from a distant, almost idyllic place, after listening to the album five times on repeat.

SBLM - Who inspires you as a band and do you think they have an impact on your sound ?

"This week its one thing and next week its something totally different. I'd say some classics are Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, The Band, The Killers and 90's punk rock."

SBLM - Why did you start making music ?

"We were just kids with nothing better to do, and as we got older I think we all realized its something we'd like to do. There's really not anything like making music with your friends. It's fun."

SBLM - What would be your ideal show/tour ?

Maybe a World tour with the smashing pumpkins in 1999? That would be dope."

SBLM - What do you prefer to play, small venues or festival stages ?
"Festivals are fun because you get to see a lot of other great bands and meet new people and there's always so much to do, but nothing is better than packing out a club and tearing it up. Nothing is better."

SBLM - What do you think makes your gigs good ?

"I like to think our shows have a nice jive to them. Good energy, good execution, killer dance moves."

SBLM - What can we expect from you as a band this year ?

"We'll see. We have some things in the oven, just not ready to say exactly what yet."

SBLM -What small bands have you came across who you think are going to go far ?

"Susto, ET Anderson, Buffalo Rodeo, Hermit's Victory, Johnny Delaware, Hey Rocco, Grace Joyner, Dear Blanca.... All great bands from The south that are killer."

SBLM - What are your favourite albums and singles at the moment ?

"I've been listening to the Kinks, "Lola Versus Powerman and The Moneygoround" a lot. Wolf was really into the new Kendrick Lamar that came out last year. As I'm writing this, I'm listening to this band, White Reaper, and it's great."

SBLM - If you could only listen to three songs for the rest of your life, what would they be ?

1. Strangers by the Kinks

2. Read My Mind by the Killers

3. Desperado performed by Linda Ronstadt

SBLM - Last but not least, what does Brave Baby actually mean ?

"Be cool, baby."

My favourite track by Brave Baby is Plastic Skateboard. I will never hear it too many times.

As usual I am hoping for a tour soon because I think they will be great to see live and to watch how each track is brought to life.

All the bands media links are below, which I suggest you follow them on because it will be the first places to find new music, new releases and what is to come.
