Who We're Listening To This Month - February

As you can probably tell, last month we were still a bit hung up on our favourites from last year, but this is a new month and is all about new music, new artists and the tracks we've had on repeat since February 1st.

Starting with BBC Introducing's track of the week, from last week. It's called 'Little Amsterdam' and comes from Welsh four-piece Luna Bay. We love it a lot.

Although we've never written about the band on this blog before, they've been in our conscience for a while with their previous tracks like 'Colours' and 'Hometown' making their way into our personal playlists.

Championed by BBC Introducing, the band's influences include the Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay and The 1975 (most of who were also supported by BBC Introducing). We absolutely love this band, this track and can't wait to see what comes next.

Moving on from one track to an entire EP, someone else we're loving at the moment is Brighton songwriter James Brett.

James Brett

Earlier last week he released his latest EP “Since When Did Smoke (Make Anything Clear?)" and we're currently loving it. Of course, this isn't Brett's first release. His Soundcloud is full of previous tracks which we suggest you should go and listen to immediately.

One of tracks on the EP that we love is called 'Real World' and is the last song on the five track EP.

The track is beautifully laidback, alike the rest of Brett's music, and pulls off lyrics like

"That's the problem with this generation // Their all looking through a screen // And they won't open their eyes // To the real world"

Although the words are pretty hard hitting and honest, the way Brett performs with softly sung vocals and gentle chords allows the track become almost lyllabye-like, where you don't expect someone to be singing about how current generation live vacariously through online society and not in the 'real world'.

We travel quite a lot for uni and this EP is perfect for listening to whilst driving early morning. It's the sort of lo-fi indie we're obsessed with listening to, at around 8am weekday mornings. (Call us weird if you want but we love it.)

Our favourite track off the EP is actually the (near enough) title track 'Since When Did Smoke" (which you should all go and listen to right now so you can see what we mean when we say we love it.)

(You're maybe wondering why none of Jame's tracks are in our Spotify playlist this month, its because they aren't on Spotify. If you've been following us for long enough you know this problem appears time and time again. Soundcloud doesn't have all the music we write about, neither does Apple or Spotify so we try to work around it. Essentially no one place has all of the music we love.)

Jumping from near-acoustic indie to a great new pop-punk track.

As some of you will probably know, we have a bit of a soft spot for anything emo/pop punk/alt rock. Last year we went to Slam Dunk festival in Birmingham and had one of the best festival experiences of our lives (so much so we're heading back this year). Over the past few months, we realised we don't write enough about the genre(s) we actually love so much.

So we're changing things here and now, kicking things off with our new favourites in Elm Tree Circle who have recently announced their debut album!

If you have never heard of them before, do not feel as if you're letting new pop punk down, just get loving them as quickly as possible (which isn't a difficult thing to do).

The four-piece from Germany haven't wasted time in making a name for themselves. They've already shared stages with Pears, Such Gold and The Ataris along with touring in Australia, Asia, Europe, the UK and are the current cover photo of Spotify's 'Rock United' playlist.

If you listen to Modern Baseball, Turnover, Gnarwolves and Tiny Moving Parts, we're pretty sure you'll love this band.

For the entire month of February, we've been burning through the bands current releases and are on the verge of begging for more new music to be released as soon as possible. Whilst we wait we have the bands most recent release 'Feel The Burn' to play on repeat.

The track itself is the first to be taken off the bands first full-length album "The Good Life" is due to be released on May 11th via KROD Records. (And as you can probably already tell we cannot wait for it!)

So as per usual, our music listening is varied as ever and we're forever waiting for new music.
